The only message we should take from this image is that no matter the era or fashion, big business has always strived to make women feel uncomfortable and unsatisfied with themselves for profit.
Back in an era just after World War II where large portions of the western world were still living on rations and there was a culture of frugality - the biggest market to exploit were slim people who they could encourage to "fatten up" by buying their products, as demonstrated in the image above.
As the decades passed, economies flourished and excess calories became easier to come by. The corporations responded to this change by imposing a new 'super slim' ideal, and encouraged people to buy a whole different range of products to help them achieve social acceptance.
Today, with all the advances in technology and medical practices, the insecurities that have been planted in us all are much more complex and unattainable than ever before. Leading many to see expensive and dehumanizing surgical procedures as the only route to achieving today's ideals. Many of these cosmetic procedures cause irreversible damage to the body and require regular maintenance and replacement by the surgeons to remain safe and effective. Thus turning parts of the human body into real estate that the corporations can, in effect, 'rent' back to their owners.
It's the basic principle of consumerism. If you can convince people that they NEED what they don't already have, you can influence their behaviors, and ultimately part them from their cash and resources.
As you can see, these aspirational ideals are dictated to us purely on the basis of what will generate big business the biggest profits. It isn't in our interests to follow it.
We are ALL in this together. This isn't a conspiracy by "skinny people" against "fat people", or vice versa. This is a conspiracy of greed against the last and only thing in this world that is TRULY ours - our bodies!
That's why I feel so passionately about helping spread a broad spectrum of healthy NATURAL body images, and encourage people to embrace and ultimately LOVE the body they already have. Because if this trend continues and we don't seize back control of our self esteem from the boardrooms of big business, I dread to think what we'll be coaxed into doing next…
